Waves, charcoal, speckling paste on canvas, 36 in x36 in, 2024
Waves explores moments of contemplation and the shifting meanings of memory. The piece unfolds like a visual stream of consciousness. Repetitive wave movements appear on the rough texture of the drawing surface, built through both subtractive and additive applications of paste. I used charcoal to create a value drawing that emphasizes the light and darkness within the waves. Linework captures the motion of the sea and wind, layered over the underlying imagery.
Each visual reference comes from a video I recorded at Santa Cruz Beach. Through the act of making, I came back to these moments- noticing what I had once overlooked, and arriving at a place of acceptance. It became a process of deconstruction and reconstruction, of revisiting the past with new eyes shaped by lived experience and conversations with others.
This work is an invitation for viewers to engage in their own quiet contemplation- to see how meaning shifts when we return to a moment with a new perspective.
